capulet.com — Which of these sites move the most traffic for your average meme--Boing Boing, TechCrunch, StumbleUpon or Digg? The evidence in this article is only anecdotal, but the answer seems to be the venerable StumbleUpon. This article describes and quantifies the 'StumbleUpon Effect' with pretty graphs and ape metaphors.

i've been dugg and stumbled(?). Digging is way more significant, bringing like 60,000 to 70,000 uniques in a day usually. StumbleUpon does keep them coming though, but usually doesn't come closer to the number of uniques. 1,000 on a good day?

It comes down to a question of an instant hit of massive traffic that tapers off quickly versus a steady flow of traffic over time.I also find the audiences are vastly different. Diggers want to read a quick summary of Todays Big Things and move on, fast. Always staying ahead of the game.StumbleUpon users use it less for up-to-the-minute coolhunting and more for filler when you're bored. Thus they're more likely to actually pay attention to your site. They may read the article instead of giving it a Digg Skim. They might even (gasp!) browse around your site a bit.
