"How about if they make a variety of OS's with varying prices so I don't have to pay much for things I don't need.Microsoft is not charging different prices for different windows products to save you money. On the contrary, they are employing marketing strategy called segmented pricing to charge each segment of the market the maximum price that each is willing to bear. In computer science this is sometimes called "crippleware", that is they make one version of the product then cripple it down to home, business, professional etc. versions. I would call it "Milking the market for all that it's worth".When it comes to user freedoms, I would say that Microsoft is better than Apple, but not as good as Linux.

"As a developer, I see .NET jobs everywhere AND a whole lot more than LAMP or Java jobs."Here, the split between .NET and Java jobs is around 50-50, not counting web development, where LAMP has a strong presence.

"and certain security features need to be implimented to ensure safe businesses practice."Like what?"If there was only one version businesses who install windows on hundreds of computeres would need to install these components on all of those computers, or get creative and perhaps ghost all of the computers."Apparently, you have never used Linux in an enterprise environment. Systems such as Kickstart and Fully Automated Installation (FAI) provide the means to customize the installation process to only install the packages that you want. With PXE and one of these systems, system installation can be fully automated, including package selection, despite using a single edition.Different editions are really mostly different sets of installed packages. There is nothing that stops Microsoft from providing a single edition and automated configuration and package selection, just like the Linux world. The reason for using multiple editions is because they wish to use tiered pricing, not because it wouldn't be practical.

Speaking as a person who has actually worked in every one of those fields, I can objectively say that you are wrong.
