news.uiuc.edu— According to a new study from the University of Illinois, there is no link between playing violent video games and real world behavior.

I see it in kids all of the time. Games, television, etc do indeed have an affect. So do a million studies if you like. Swear up and down how insane and foolish it is. Bottom line, I see it with my own two eyes and nothing else is going to change my mind. You are what you consume. If you eat crap you have bad health. The same goes for all other activities we surround ourselves with in our lives. It's really rather simple.
The study didnt seem to separate cause and effect: i.e. were the people predisposed to aggressive behaviour the same ones who played that game (as low violence as that one was)?Perhaps they were looking for the wrong effect or testing a different theory. I suspect violent games have 2 main effects, which i would be interested to see studied:a) preparing us to act quickly in certain ways in certain scenarios (which may not occur often in everyday life);b) desensitizing us to violence to the degree necessary to "push the button" or support violent action against others (especially when we arent there to see the effects).
@ kenera - Those are some very good points, I don't entirely agree, but I do see the other sides view. I personally don't think though as I rant below that cuz you or someone else may believe that it causes violence, that it actually does. Using some of the logic present here, you can make the same arguement for alcohol, women ("god" knows only women can make a man truly go insane), food ( cuz if I don't eat I become violent) etc.etc. @ iChuckles - Starting with a call to "your" god is not a good way to start off a post, especially if you've noticed the tension in the room, but that's just my opinion.Belief is a good way of saying it, cuz I can't say your wrong, but, how about we throw a little spin to it.Religion causes violence. What if I said I believe (in which I can't be wrong, cuz it's a belief) that anyone who uses their religion to push their beliefs upon me should be hung, that way it'll teach them not to force their beliefs upon me, and therefor that persons life experience is another persons lesson. Does that sound like a plan? Cuz you and your religion does it to me all the time. Want me to elaborate, cuz I will happily do so in pleasing both myself and others here?Do you want all the kids to play happy, happy, joy, joy games?Brainwashing the masses even more?As long as sane companies like Take2 employee sane individuals who don't want to convert everyone, then there will always be GTA type games, sorry to ruin your "eden". And the video games didn't make me say this, religion did, literally, cuz it was mentioned.
M4tt3rSorry man, but I just can't get past you using "cuz" every other word in your writing. It's extremely difficult to read. It makes your points hard to read and understand.
LOL! M4tt3r - at least I am not "like" you know, "cuz" whatever. Honestly, I am not making fun of you, just with you. You are right about religion. It has been the largest cause of the bloodiest wars in the past and it is trying very hard to make wars today - right now it is just terrorism. Overall, I find it amusing that money is wasted on trying to see if vedio games are bad. As stated before, they are bad and they aren't. There is no rule to encompass all of the people all of the time. Whereas, we won't stop drinking and smoking when we know that it will damage most of the people most of the time. The power here is not media influence. It is something much much stronger - money!
how can a kid learn to put a gun together and shoot people when all they do in games are sitting and pressing a button and why would they it's not like the games of today have so good graphics that it looks like real life.and most terrorists are doing those terrible cause they have religion and in their belief they get to heaven if they kill themselfs and alot of other people.
and if you check all the tests they've all been done in America and how can they link violence to video games when the state uses all the money to wage war for billions of dollars so that taxes grow and i bet that screws up people just to make money to get it taken away again
and you are clearly an expert, being an avid gamer with no history of crime whatsoever, aside from a couple speeding tickets, I can tell you from MY own experience that there is no connection between the two.

Is true, the twitching in my eye when I get mad at something is genetic. Well back to get some hot coffee.
