readwriteweb.com — Despite grumbling from big-name artists and record labels around rampant P2P 'piracy', there's never been a better time to make money from creating music tracks of your own. There are dozens of useful websites - some completely free to use - that serve budding musicians and seasoned tourers alike.

No replacing the road though... How about a hybrid or electric van for touring?

One thing about music that won't ever change is the fact that no matter how good you are, or how many friends like your stuff, if you don't know people who know people, your music will almost never get out there. You'll always need someone who knows people who can get you into shows (it's damn hard to get shows without knowing people who have friends who work in venues). You'll also need people who know reputable engineers to produce your albums, even though it's getting easier to do it yourself with computers, you can always use a little tweaking from someone who knows how to produce an album. Plus, if you can't get someone who knows someone who can get you decent pricing on merchandise production, you'll always be eating your own tail. It's all about hobknobbing with the right people. And, even then, you may not get lucky. Also, every aspiring musician, no matter what genre, should read this. It's a stark wake up call to everyone who thinks just by laying down some lyrics or playing solos will get you poppin Crystal and driving Lamborghinis:http://www.negativland.com/albini.html

That's why you're such a great musician. /sarcasm

agreed. also, check out ubuntustudio or sabayon linux for some great free/OSS music production apps. a lot of those proprietary apps listed by Bricks are super pricey.

For musicians who need their own website, but aren't designers/programmers I would add these to the list:ResoundSpot hosting for musicians: http://resoundspot.com/accounts/register/paid_host ...HostBaby hosting for musicians: http://hostbaby.com/pricing
