To put marvin69's post in layman's terms, the blades themselves are able to tilt and thus remove the lift, even with the rotor spinning. There's actually a trick (supoposedly) where as a helicopter falls toward the ground during an engine failure, the rotor blades are tilted reverse from normal (which would create negative lift if the engine were running) to cause the rotor to spin as the air flows by. Then, right before it hits the ground, they reverse the pitch on the blades back to normal to create lift in order to reduce the speed at which they hit the ground (though it would only be a small amount).
