philly.com— It may be hard to recall, but once there was a time when people took responsibility for their behavior, without recourse to the psychiatric and psychological communities.

I happen to be a Psychiatrist and it is extremely frustrating how little most people know about mental illness. Even more frustrating is how a lot of people talk like they know sh!t, like they have some understanding. Forgive me but if it was that simple, I could have easily skipped the 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 4 years of specialty training!!! I don't know what I was thinking.Do you know how many people I've seen for "I think I have ADHD" or similar things? A lot of them, after careful evaluation, I've sent away without treatment. Inattention is a symptom, not a diagnosis. "Depression" is a also a symptom, not a diagnosis. Major Depressive Disorder is a diagnosis and means something very specific and involves a substantial degree of dysfunction. Most people read something on the web and they think they have it - it's called the Medical Student Syndrome.Who do you think they call when someone "crazy" commits any kind of aberrant crime? The Forensic Psychiatrist will determine if the person is competent to stand trial, the responsibility is determined by a jury of their peers.WTF do you think you are? I wouldn't dare to make over simplistic generalizations about things I don't know.If anybody has any kind of real data published in any peer-reviewed journal supporting any of the bull crap written in this article I would like to see it. Otherwise this is just someones opinion. Digg is great for everything except a lot of the "science" articles.
Frankly sir, not to undercut what you do, but i think psychiatry is in it's infancy and most of the people in your industry have no idea what you're doing. Modern psychology today is equal to bloodletting as a form of surgery.
my Fiance's brother has been misdiagnosed and his parents bought into it hook line and sinker. He was diagnosed as ADD or ADHD i don't remember which one and now his mom excuses any bad behavior because "he's got a problem" I have known him for 6 years and it was only the since his parents had a new baby and thus more drain on their time and energy that they discovered he had a problem. His real problem is LDD - Lack of Discipline Disorder. If his parents would take the time to actually discipline him he could improve his behavior and then help with his younger brother.Next example will upset several people but read all the way through it, I'm not as much of an a$$hole as I seem:My mom and one of my sisters become psychotic once a month of course they have PMS and nobody should upset them because they're not in their right mind during this time. Funny thing is my other sister both sisters have same parents so should be genetically similar... doesn't. IMPORTANT POINT: I am not saying ADD/ADHD/PMS don't exist!!!!!last part then I'll tie this all togetherWhile being a male of normal hormone producing age, I had and have typical male instincts: inclination for rough-housing, rejection of authority, other testosterone related activities. However, being in martial arts at the time, I learned the hard way (push-ups mostly) that those behaviors are unacceptable, and learned to at least limit them to socially tolerable occurrences. To tie this all up: I realize there are or can be medical/chemical malfunctions and imbalances that give a person a tendency to act certain ways. However the person can fight the inclination. True a person will fall down a steep incline (think huge gaping hole in the ground) but just like a person can walk up hill all but the most serious inclinations can be overcome with effort without drugs.the problems isn't so much over medicalizing as it is over medicating
Looks like this guy's not the first one to come to this type of conclusion...“The work of the psychiatrist was taken up mainly with describing and classifying symptoms. This procedure has been strongly criticized by some students on the ground that it leads nowhere and encourages a false pretense of understanding where there is none. Giving a name to something does not increase our understanding of it.”-The Psychology of Abnormal People, by John J. B. Morgan, Longmans, Green & Co., New York, 1928

Are they? I don't know. It seems to me that the psychodocs see the pills as a way to help them manage the problem person, not help them.

Again, the author wasnt talking about PTSD, he was talking about IED. Your point is baseless.
