macworld.co.uk — The days of selling software through the traditional commercial model are numbered, as open source is becoming the paradigm of choice, said Greg Stein, chairman of the Apache Software Foundation, at the EclipseCon 2006 conference on Wednesday.

I totally disagree with this guy's views. He's saying that most software that you use today will be free in 5-10 years. That's bull...I have yet to see a successful open source pc game that millions of people play. Why? Because there aren't any programmers and computer artists who are willing to work 60 hours a week for 3 years for nothing. And since people work on open source projects on a part-time basis, massive projects could take 5 years while companies who get paid to build the equivalent piece of software will be finished a lot sooner. Businesses would rather pay for the software now than wait for free software and support.Sure, Open Office might be worth looking at in a few years, but that will come with a price. Stability and features.I just don't see people working for nothing. Programming isn't easy... it's tedious and frustrating and usually calls for long hours. Like I said above... paying businesses will always slow the progression of open source.

You should read Ed Burnette's writeup of my talk rather than the stupid linked post (which is just a soundbite). I specifically call out games as one of the types of software resistant to moving to Open Source. It's a shame that a summary was linked, as people draw ill-informed opinions. There is a lot more context around my statements.
