41MPG for a Smart FourTwo? My Ignis can do that, and it's 0-60MPH is 8.9sec! Oh, and I can fit an oven, a stove, a rangehood, a driver and a passenger in it at the same time. It's also cheaper.Stupid article.
Weird, the EPA says it gets 28 city/36 highway but whatever. The real point is that according to the EPA is your corolla will only cost about $16 more a month ($200 a year) and you get more space which isn't much of a difference and if the insurance is most expensive than the corolla (I'm just guessing) than both cars might cost the same to operate. The Smart is a great car for people living in the city due to its size (easy parking) and people wanting a cheap second car for commuting but for all other people there are better choices like Honda Fit or others in that list.
Because i have bought a TDI, runs bio fuel in the summer and 2% soy in the winter. On the highway driving 55 mph I average about 60 mpg. It depends on the distance. This past week I averaged 65.3, but before the storm I was @ 67+ mpg.

It's technically considered a motorcycle by most DMV's around the country.

No, they did "real world" tests and averaged the mileage. If the data is accurate, than that is pathetic
