realgeek.com — Back in 1971, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak went into business to build ‘Blue Boxes’. A device that allowed free illegitimate phone calls by faking the signals used by AT&T. Why would Jobs take a stand against iPhone/AT&T hackers now? An interesting story about how Steve Jobs started business.

This is not just fanboy talk. Jobs always makes allusions to the fact that they only make things with a hurdle to jump over in order to protect their exclusivity agreements with witht he service providers. As the hardware maker, apple would profit more from unlocking anyway.

My guess would be companies wanting a piece of the Apple Pie? AT & T is making a lot of money off the iPhone as well. You sign a contract for two years of service and that's where they make their money. Apparently it's enough to give Apple a slice of that too. The European carriers are standing in line to make similar deals, so I guess that AT & T is doing OK.

They don't lose money. They just make less. Considering that some might have not bought the phone if it weren't unlockable, it may even balance out.

Well, you're right and wrong. Captain Crunch was the first person to build an electronic blue box, which generated a tone replicating that of a toy whistle from a box of cereal. Steve Jobs did never build a blue box, but he did sell the ones that Steve Wozniak made.
