WindowsSecrets.com — Turns out the "silent install" that Microsoft's been doing recently with Windows Update actually does mess up an important function of Windows XP. Fortunately, there's an easy command to enter to straighten things out.

Metaphor... but awful indeed.

This occurred after repairing system files using your installation disc, apparently rendering some files unregistered and thus breaking Windows update until you either force install an older version and allow it to update, or create the listed bat file and register the dll files yourself.

Buried as f**kING RETARDED.Let me see, you try to revert the Windows Update DLLs to an older version, then you're suprised when it doesn't work? Also, on the "silent update" issue, at first I agreed that it should not be updating without consent... until I found out that you idiots were talking about WINDOWS UPDATE updating ITSELF. This is obvious, and every update system ever made updates itself, almost always without asking; it can't ask you about the actual updates if it doesn't update itself first.

Thanks Dude, your reproduction of the fix is invaluable to me since I just found out about this and all news about this issue link back to WindowsSecrets.com which just happens to be currently down :SBTW, has anyone noticed the permanent MSN.COM script link to this article?!?!? I had a hell of a time posting this due to security text "mispellings" ?!?!?
