wired.com — Whenever I talk or write about my own security setup, the one thing that surprises people -- and attracts the most criticism -- is the fact that I run an open wireless network at home. There's no password. There's no encryption. Anyone with wireless capability who can see my network can use it to access the internet.

Leaving your network open is a great way to harvest credit card details, usernames and passwords.I go by the old adage "neither a borrower or a lender be" - both leaving your network open and connecting to an unknown network are potentially dangerous.

ok i understand being neighbourly and opening it up but if you leave it open to anyone then how do you know some sicko isnt looking at CHILD PORN, credit card fraud, terrosism or doing other illegal activities over YOUR internet and how do you know the police aint gona be knocking on your door soon. even if your innocent chances are you may get branded. please use your common sense peopleif you know your neighbours ask them if they would like the key to get on and lock down your wireless for your sake before its too late

This guys is a f**king idiot! He needs at least WPA2 encryption. Even WPA with PSK isn't safe: http://tinyurl.com/2cukqp but not encrypting your wireless at all? Unbelievable!

that's great, specially the 2km part! but why is it so complicated to set it up? isn't there a distro that already comes configured for it out of box? i hope you convey with me when i say iptables is non trivial at all.
