blog.statcounter.com— A few months back, StatCounter was approached by an advertiser, offered lots of $$$, and asked to include a spyware cookie on all member sites?they refused on the spot.

I see a lot of jealous people upset because there are a lot of diggs on this story and because Statcounter doesn't even need the digg publicity as a very successful and well known PR10 site and service. To the people that keep bitching about adaware... please, wake up, adaware and other tools like that simply identify cookies as a possible way that information can be gleaned. It has nothing to do with anything a company is or is not doing with cookies.Sigh, no, I am not in any way associated with Statcounter, except as a happy user of their service -- which I choose to pay a small amount for even though I could simply use it free instead.
Statcounter is just as bad as google and so is specificclick. To say one is better than the other is simply hypocritical. Google knows more about you than any other company except maybe microsoft. On google, if you search on methods to effectively kill your spouse and a year later they are dead, that's enough evidence to implicate you and it is data google currently stores along with your adsense/analytics browsing habits, contextual, and behavioral data. So, who is the big bad company now? Google does no evil? Harrumph.
I'm glad statcounter told us about this so I am forewarned about the possibility of giving my site visitors a 'worm' that will slow down their pc's, also I am now very confident in advising others to use this counter.
StatCounter rocks, and may they continue to rock ever more. I have never been more pleased with a site that provides such a valuable service at no cost. I recommend them to anyone.

I believe Statscounter is referring to Sitemeter, and the advertiser is specificclick.net.I cleared all my cookies, visited a site with a Sitemeter, and then saw 4 cookies added from specificclick.net (<a class="user" href="http://paretologic.com/resources/definitions.aspx?remove=specificclick%20cookie).">http://paretologic.com/resources/definitions.aspx?remove=specificclick%20cookie).</a> I don't know who runs specificclick.net.

StatCounter offers an excellent service that is simple and intuitive to use. Glad they didn't start mucking up the works with these shady bastards.
