The extra chevron is obviously for traveling to the Farscape alternate galaxy where half of the actors can meet their alternate selves.after that are they going to the Andromeda alternate galaxy so they can meet Dylan Hunt.... and he can take them to meet Hercules and Xena in there alternate galaxy......... and from there to the Battlestar Galactica alternate galaxy..... so they can all meet up and forever kill the actors from star trek....... DEATH to Kirkya ok that was "kinda" lame
@neocortexAt the risk of treading into greater dorkdom, I just had to correct one point. The Stargates, at least according to the show, were not put in place by the Goa'uld (creatures in bellies) but rather by the Ancients.
Darn, I was hoping for Wormhole X-treme series. :)I'm guessing 9th chevron creates a WHITE wormhole, perhaps to different planes of existence, like where the ascended beings are). We've seen white wormholes before.
I am new to this post, but I was wondering if anyone has given any thought to this possible use for the ninth chevron. It is true that the DHD's can communicate with one another over subspace thanks to the information about their correlative updates through the millenia. Now, what if activation of the ninth chevron is a new way to establish the point of origin for a moving stargate. I propose that it is possible to carry a stargate anywhere in the galaxy on a ship or station or whatever. And the ninth chevron calls out for local DHDs to confirm it's position and allows for the gate to adjust the trajectory of the wormhole based upon that data.... Does anyone think that I am crazy?
I don't believe it's for time travel, because the ancients already tried that and failed miserably. I can't think of anything else but gating to another universe. When u look at it logically, 7 chevrons are within our galaxy, the 8th chevron is for other galaxies, which is one step up. The only thing that is one step up from gating to other planets in other galaxies is gating to other universes, which, i think the 9th chevron accomplishes. But i don't mean things like the parallel universes where there's an evil you or you're an artist or whatever, becuase the ancients already built a mirror that links to such dimensions, but i mean completely different universes where everything is completely different. completely different laws, creatures, etc. You know, the multiverses kinda thing. I don't know how else to explain it, but that's the only thing that makes sense. And besides, time travel has been overdone, it's boring, travelling to one of the multiverses hasn't really ever been done. that would be interesting
You are crazy.. plus, it's already been done. Remember the episode where they gate onto a mothership in orbit around a planet, and then it goes into hyperspace. Then when it comes to earth, they blow it up and use the gate to get off the mothership.
Law and Order: Stargate Victims UnitCSI AbydosCan anyone tell me if all the CSI and Law and Order shows are spinoffs? Or all the Star Trek shows? Why is Atlantis a spinoff, and Stargate Universe not?Anway... I've never done any astronomy myself, but i'm guessing there are more galaxies in the universe than there are symbols on a stargate, right? I've never been quite sure if the 8th symbol is a distance (like if one symbol represents 10 million light-years, and another represents 20 million etc.) or if it represents a specific galaxy (the way the 7th symbol reprents the point of origin). Either way though, your options are limited by the number of symbols on the gate. SO i would guess that the ninth symbol is just another digit for the 8th symbol part of the calculation. Instead of say... 40 galaxies to chose from, you would have 1600. I don't know how long the ancients spent exploring the universe (i think somebody said millions of years, but i could be wrong) but if it was long enough, they could conceivably have visited a few hundred galaxies, even if they never settled them. They may even have sent un-manned ships to seed stargates among the cosmos just for something to do. Anything is possible. But this is all just guess work, and i made all the numbers up from thin air.
There are 38 symbols on the Gate. Like an area code, the 8th chevron gives us a distance factor to another galaxy - but it can only connect to 38 other galaxies. The 9th chevron will give access to another 38 of *something* be it galaxies or universes or what have you, like a country code (which has been said). So say, as it has been postulated, the 8th chevron gives you a "local group" of galaxies. The 9th could take you to another local group. The 8th would then take you to a certain galaxy in that group, and the address would then take you to a specific Gate. There are so many problems with the idea of this actually being what the new show is about. Firstly, it's been done. Twice.Secondly, we've been told that this is something completely different and not a spin off (hence, forget about Stargate Command or Atlantis Mission trying to come up with power requirements). We've also been told that it goes along with the established story lines, but that it does not directly draw from them. It's been hinted that it will deal with human exploration. It takes place now, not in the future or past.It seems to me more likely that the 9th chevron will do something different than what we are expecting. It may change the way the gate normally dials so that certain combinations of symbols activate different functions. It may lead to different realities - who knows, it may be the key to exploring something so simple as the human mind! It may even involve normal people outside of the realm of the SGC who accidentally discover the technology by themselves. We just don't know, and the writers, producers, etc. are being very secretive on purpose. But given the clues left by them, I think we all need to broaden our horizons just a bit more to figure out why it is called "Universe."
my opinion is simply this - the structure of stargate show is at some level based on reality that we know about the universe....we have solar systems, galactic positions, galaxies, clusters, and superclusters. i think its just another level up in terms of how far out you can get. either via cluster or supercluster level of distance carrier. which in reality is pretty damm far!and id also love to finally see some FURLINGS!! common now...
I don't think the 9th chevron is going to have anything to do with time travel or parallel universes. It's already been determined that you can't have two of the same person in a given universe, and time travel, purely from a writing standpoint, would be too difficult to follow as every action taken in the past would change the current time line of every episode. Whatever the 9th chevron does, it would have to be a pre-programmed action, just like the 8th. In a regular dial, the final chevron determines the origin of the wormhole. Since, in an 8 chevron address, the 7th symbol is still the point of origin, it stands to reason that the 8th is a pre-programmed code to connect directly to the Atlantis gate. So whatever the 9th chevron does, it will have to be something we haven't been faced with yet, but something the Ancients wanted it to do on a regular basis. I like azrealsky's idea of moving stargates, or the idea of accessing the ascended plane, although I don't think it's the latter (Would you want to leave the ascended plane? And if it was so easy to get there, why would they have devoted their entire lives to ascending?)
I have a feeling that a LOT of people would like to forget about Infinity...It not being part of the canon, and to quote the ever popular WIKIPEDIA®, "The writers and producers of Stargate SG-1 and the main canon of the Stargate franchise were not involved with Infinity, and neither MGM[citation needed] (producers of the Stargate franchise), the production teams nor the fans of Stargate[who?] consider Infinity to be an official part of the Stargate universe."Mostly I think the sponsors and marketers would want to forget this thing....I never saw it myself, don't have an opinion personally. I just know it lasted one season, which tends not to speak well of a series in general.

The idea makes a little more sense when you realize that the movie is said to have time travel in it.
