glop.org — under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable.

I had a bad Starforce experience with the King Kong demo. Three BSOD's and a Starforce driver update later I managed to actually start the game. By then I just didn't care anymore.

Starforce will pay you $10,000 if you can reprocude the CD Drive problem in thier offices with a drive that was previously working fine. If you can do it they will also pay for your airfare and two days lodging.Someone please do this.

That would explain what happened with my late DVD burner. When from perfectly okay to slower, slower and slower until it would not read or burn anything. Surprise surprise, it all ha penned after I bought, installed and played GTR which oh would you believe it uses StarForce in order to give hackers just a tad more problems copying the game.Once more the Sony mentality - annoy your PAYING customers to give just a little bit more trouble to those who will end up pirating the game anyway...

BTW, the comment that was erased had a letter I sent to Nadeo about the free trackmania nations about why a free game needed copy protection=============contact@nadeo.com=============I am just a user of you great Nations game, but I later found out thatyou require Starforce to install, silently, to play that game. I' allfor stopping the pirates but the reason I chose not to buy any of yourgames thus far was because of your choice to use a driver/softwarebased protection scheme. Now to my agry surpsie I find out that it isalso in a FREE game. I just want to know WHY? Copy protection is hereto stop the pirates from spreading games on the internet, but thisgame is free and readily available from lots of websites, so I askagain, why? Now I have to stop using your great game to get starforceoff of my system.Thank you very much for the few days I played this game, but I willnot be playing it any further until you remove this requirement whichis not necessary. Also, seems I am not the only one outraged over the fact that it isinstalled secretly. The story is being spread on mega popular website DIGGhttp://digg.com/technology/Starforce_Copy_Protection_-_Worse_than_a_Sony_Rootkit_, and I will be joining them in spreading the word.Jose "DCJoeDog" Rivera=============let's see if it's erased again

Got a new hdd and installed windows on it, installed all my games except a new one I had just bought, Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Before that, windows would boot in 20 seconds, my dvd-rw drive worked like a charm, bf2 would not freeze on me after loading a map and have a cursor stuck up in the screen even if I switch to differnt windows. Then, after starforce was installed 2 weeks ago, suddenly my dvd burner only gives me errors on my cds and my computer takes 5 minutes to boot up. After the bios post screen, it's just a black screen for 5 minutes until I hear my hard drive start spining up then windows boot up normally. As soon as I finish up Splinter cell, I'm uninstalling it and using the copy protection company's tool to remove the drivers. Hopefully, this will fix my problems.
