I use a coffee shop called City Brew and I also bring my own cup. If you use a CB cup, you also get a (small) discount. I have a City Brew cup almost ten years old and it is no longer made. Heavy as hell and I always get a comment on what a nice looking cup it is. Every little bit helps. I need to start using those reusable shopping bags as well.Sigh, methinks I need to get a life. Sigh.CB coffee $1.16 & no tax. All the refills you can stand.
They're not afraid your cup is going to contaminate their utensils, it's about protecting themselves from lawsuits. Because they can't be 100% sure the cup you bring in is clean from germs/viruses/fungus/poison. They'll get sued if you get sick. (especially in the US)
Hmm, it must depend on your area. In Canada, most Starbucks have a section at the front where they have (overpriced) Starbucks-branded travel mugs for sale, and if you bring a cup in to use, they rinse it out before filling it.
