lcarsdeveloper.com — The LCARS Standards Development Board at http://www.lcarsdeveloper.com features near-exact replications of the LCARS interface seen on Star Trek (particularly Voyager). As you'll see on the site, there's more to LCARS than just random colors and numbers, everything actually means something! You can even learn how to pilot the USS Voyager!

The graphic designer in me cringes when he sees this interface, but the nerd in me loves it.

I created this story when I saw there was an interest in LCARS...http://digg.com/gaming/The_Next_Generation_of_Star_Trek_LCARS_But I'm guessing I should have just made it a comment to this one? Learning the digg. :)

I love this, but you think the designers of the 24th century would choose at LEAST a readible typeface! That condenced typeface is SO HARD ON THE EYES! Argh!

First of all I am going to start out by tipping my hat to the developer. It was an excellent way to hone his flash skills and give nerdcore fans a chance to play with an interface we have been oogling for years. Seriously, way to go, for a hobby and skill practice session you really outdid yourself, props. Now, for all of you anal retentive narrow minded asshats who want to come into a forum permeated with nerd/geek activity and bash this guy for his efforts, I offer the following: Star Trek most definitely had it's shortcomings as a television show, you will get no argument from me there. However, Star Trek was more than just a string of non-sequiters that was begging for a cohesive plot line, it was a spring board for the imagination. The ST franchise is the perfect example of how life imitates art and how many of our innovations are spawned through the pure imaginative ramblings of those who are capable of dreaming of a world beyond what they see with their own two eyes. Many of you yuppie pole vaulters have Star Trek to think for many of the little technological luxiers and marvels that you take for granted every single day. Take the automated doors that now adorn just about every damn grocery store and walmart on the planet for example. Or how about your cell phone on which you spend endless hours talking to your circle of homo erotic companions about the last episode of American Idol? Star Trek was directly responsible for the inspiration of these little wonders. We could also take a look at all of the scientific theories and research projects spawned out of thin air thanks to someone's imagination? Warp theory (didn't even exist previous to Star Trek, they just made it up because it sounded cool, little did they know it would spark heated scientific debate and research years later), even the research that is currently being conducted to develop transporter technology (though it seems a futile effort now, at least the effort is being made). The point is, nerds are not just fans of ST because it is great television, they are fans because it inspires them to dream of tommorrows possibilities. Orson Wells wrote about man travelling to the Moon decades before it happened, [planting the seed of possibilities in the conciousness of his fellow man. Years later we travelled to the Moon, yeah, Neil Armstrong, what a f**king nerd, who dreams of walking on the moon anyway . . ? It's the nerds who dare to dream of tommorrow and brave riddicule and persecution in order to make it a reality for all those who can't see past their starbucks frappaccino and Abercrombie cargos. Try and keep one thing in mind, out here, in the real world, US NERDS RUN s**t. If you don't believe me, see "richest man in America". "500 years ago, everybody "knew" that the earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody "knew" that the earth was flat. Imagine what you'll "know" tomorrow. "
