gizmodo.com — Here's a great idea for anyone who loves books and doesn't have enough apartment space or a Kindle: a "secret staircase" made of English oak, lined with books left, right and center, leading to a loft bedroom in a Victorian 1898 apartments block

Why would you wear shoes into your bookcase?

So that works out at about £40 does it?

...as if books have some kind of intrinsic value. books are just a medium for the communcation of ideas. TV does a better job. OBSOLETE'D

That's about 750 square feet, and I wound up paying $1600 for 350 square feet in New York City for a studio. This is a better bargain (which is a surprise since London is more expensive than NYC)

I've seen one like this; it was a spiral staircase with rope railings, and the stairwell was recessed for bookshelves. Very, very smart architectural engineering. I'm planning on doing something like this when I build my house.Kindles are great, but there's just something about holding a leather-bound book in your hands while snuggled up in a chair-and-a-half with the cat and a mug of cocoa...I'll hold off on the Kindle until they come up with a leather-and-linen slipjacket for it.

I agree with the first part of your post. There's some great information availible in video format, like them MIT OCW lectures. It is perfectly possible to enrich your mind and learn new things while looking at moving images with sound. However, that does not render books "obsolete". And you still have the problem of securing quality shows when TV networks continue selling out to the lowest common denominator. And I'm not just talking about reality TV shows in mainstream networks, either; even channels like the History Channel have begun showing things like alien abduction stories.Honestly? A computer with an internet connection is your best bet for serving as a good source of both text and video. It is also much cheaper than paying for DVDs or paperbacks.

Creative design. Not bad for the cost. It looks great and perfect for book lovers.
