It's interesting to note that the article neglects to mention how much bigger this "ecological footprint" is that what would normally be consumed by the same number of people going about their normal lives. Could it be that what little change there could be doesn't really impact anything?

Good point davalf. I'm pretty sure all those people would still have eaten if they hadn't gone to the sporting event, and most of them probably would have driven somewhere as well. Attributing the ecological damage to the sporting even itself, rather than our environmentally irresponsible transportation and farming practices is just clouding the real issues.
