withleather.uproxx.com — Here’s an undated video of an earlier Scripps National Spelling Bee where this confused youngster is being asked to spell “negus,” the term used for an Ethiopian monarch, and you can just see the kid looking around, perhaps waiting for a cadre of young toughs to pummel him through the stage at the first sign of anything potentially inappropriate.

I liked how he started laughing a little when he finally spelled out the word.

The sentence they used was the best--it made it sound like a plural word.

so unfair, and illogical at the same time. I'm from Ethiopia, and the damn word is pronounced N'goos (or Nougoos). Why in the world would they ask the kid to spell some word from another language they pronounced awfully wrong.e.g. imagine being asked to spell the french word 'malheur' (and the other guy is literally pronouncing what he reads)
