Eh, I guess I wasn't aware of vim until well after 1997. In those days I was mostly dealing with systems that never saw vim, only vi. And with keyboards that had no arrow keys.

I honestly find that beautiful. shift+character (generally) does the logical opposite of character. And yy is pretty easy on my hands when compared to ^A ^space ^E Alt+w
