newlaunches.com — The Playstation 3 consumes a staggering 380 watts of power which is more than double the Xbox 360's 160 watts and eight times the PS2's nimble 45 watts. So spending an average of 4 hours a day on the machine will add approx $ 80 to your yearly power bill.

Funny thing is that not a single comment addresses the fact that this is bad from an environmental perspective. Creating power efficient systems is what will evetually help us conserve our valuable resources which are burning up faster with each passing day.Why do you think people are preffering the opteron processors over older xeons. Why are the newer core 2 duos much more power efficient? Because in large numbers the costs do start adding up. Each company should do its part and ensure that they build systems which do not hog power.I am not saying that the PS3 is a power hog based on what this blogger has to say but the point is more with regards to ensure that power/performance ratio tuning is very critical for the future.

Pseudo - The power supply is inside - there is no brick.

I don't pay for gas or electricity, the PS3 runs cool and quiet, and online is free. That means the system is still cheaper than the Xbox 360.Some of us aren't moved one way or the other by these facts.

If a PS3 may possibly cost that much per year, then I wonder how much the electric bills would cost for a Crossfired ATI R600 with an Intel Quad-Core..... T_T

Juat in time for winter! thanks sony!

Wow! Bet the PS3 alone is against the Kyoto Protocol.

Good eye. That's a great check. By the way, who cares? It's $80, which really isn't that much related to an annual bill set. Playing an MMO that costs $12 a month to play (which used to be standard, now I think most of them are $15 a month) is much more than that. Also, alot of the serious gamers, which many of you are, have at least a 400W power supply in your computer. So, if you're worried about power, turn off your damn computer.

Haha!Looks like a lot of people need to understand the difference between nominal power consumption and a power supply rating.By the ignorant logic shown here my electic bill should be about $800 per month instead of $70.

Also, the power would be much much lower when not playing a game, so leaving it in standby 24x7 connected to the internet as they suggest probably wouldn't use up all that much power. Same with using the web browser or doing other simple tasks. The PSP, for example, will automatically adjust its clock speed to save power. Then consider that the cell has its SPE's, which will probably not be in use at all when a game/bluray is not running. Marking as inaccurate because they have not established their claim that it actually consumes that much power.

Well that's not that bad, I mean it is a little power usage but if you consider the Nvidia RSX GPU and the CELL CPU processor combined they got the power usage down pretty low. My PC uses 1200W at maximum so the PS3 will be the baby in my house.
