gizmodo.com — Compared to most Sony gear we've seen over the past few years, the Mylo is a breath of fresh air. The media player does MPEG-4, digital audio, and pictures. But it also has a WiFi connection and a QWERTY keyboard, for chatting on Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger (No AIM support, sorry.) Wait, wait, wait! It also works as a wireless Skype phone!

Yea the problem with sony is they have artists to 'protect'. thats why their products suck.

1) this cannot replace your regular phone at all for many reasons. skype goes back to normal pay for usage on jan 1, 2007. additionally, you wont get a signal when you're not at your house or at another public hotspot. this does not have a regular cellphone in it so other than the wifi+skype it's just an addition.2) this is still made by sony, which is trash. buy their overpriced proprietary memory sticks that will be unusable in a year or two bc they'll have changed the format, and the sticks are only usable on sony devices. sony has personally screwed me. i had one of the nwms9's when they first came out (a sony "mp3" player... which is another issue), and there were certain parts on it that were made out of this one type of plastic, including the battery door. when the parts started breaking (4 months into owning it), i contacted sony support which gave me the runaround for weeks, until they finally said just buy a new one (for $350). the other issue, as mentioned before, is whether this really plays mp3s, or do u have to convert your music to their omg format (a wrapper for atrac3+drm)? all of the network walkmans suffered from this. i wonder if the psp did too? i wouldnt know bc i wouldnt buy it solely bc it's made by sony.this is basically a psp minus the games plus wifi. if you want a non-sissy device with wifi, look at the eten m600 or the nokia 9300i. i personally just got a motorola a1200 (which doesnt have wifi, but does everything else amazingly well), and it's awesome.

Battery life, according to the spec sheet is: 3.5 hours for skype, 7 hours for browsing the web, and 45 hours of music playback. It has a lithium ion battery.

The interesting thing is both the mylo and Nokia 770 have the Opera browser built-in.

For those who don't remember, you can use AIM/MSN/Yahoo/ and pretty much other IM protocols via Google Talk thanks to jabber functionality.Thats why i love google so much!<a class="user" href="http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/google-talk-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html">http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/google-talk-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html</a>

MyLo the artist came up on all my google searches last night, especially looking for video reviews. MyLo the artist should get a good chunk of change or at least a contract out of this deal.

Krispy mentioned What's the point of the WiFi if you can't get at sizable content online like video and mp3? Nothing mentions the ability to download either video or MP3 files through the WiFi capability, so is the WiFi only good for IM, VOIP, and streaming MP3 to other devices in the area(functionality mentioned in the Gizmodo review , see review at <a class="user" href="http://mavenmapper.blogspot.com/2006/08/sony-mylo-wi-fi-media-handheld-mp3.html">http://mavenmapper.blogspot.com/2006/08/sony-mylo-wi-fi-media-handheld-mp3.html</a>

I really hope this thing takes off. It could finally get the Telcos off there asses and lower the price of mobile phone data connections so people can actually DO SOMETHING with them. Will IM + web be the killer app that finally breaks open the Mobile Data market?

Funny then that Mylo(the band) is under the RCA Records label, which owned by Sony BMG. So likely Mylo(the bad) can't complain about mylo(the product).

I had this thing pre-ordered for quite awhile now(Netgear keeps delaying it), I was also thinking of the Belkin WiFI Skype phone, but cancled it after I saw the Mylo.Main reason being that I need to be able to log-in through browser to connect to WiFi at work and at school. The fact that Mylo has a browser makes it much more useful as a skype phone, escpecially being that these WiFi phones are ~$200 anyway, minus well get the mylo for $350.

I am definitely going to pick up this product when it hits the shelves. The savings people will make in telephone/cellphone bills will be awesome, thanks to skype. I mean skype's monthly cost for having a phone number is only 3 dollars per month vs 30-50 dollars we usually get charged by the cellular providers. Personally I'd rather give up some mobility for an insanely cheap price for my phone bill. So what will I do if I'm stranded somewhere and need to make a call, find your closest McDonalds! I'm half joking, who wants to hang out at McDonalds, but its nice to know every McDonalds has free wifi acccess which makes your Mylo a little more mobile than a landline. Theres other free wifi locations I'm sure, jiWire will be really handy for that. Wifi isn't wide spread yet, but it doesn't mean you can't take advantage of whats already out there and I don't mean go out and park your car next to someone's house and leech off their internet, although majority of people in the US don't even use encryption on their wireless routers anyhow! Don't ask me how I know, I hmmmm, read it in a book yea...I'm mainly purchasing this for its skyping ability, but the chat/music/internet/video is definitely icing on the cake. I find it interesting that the display is practically the same size as the Ipod video (2.5") mylo (2.4") at the same resolution. Yes I'd like the display to be bigger, yes I'd like to have a higher resolution, but on the bright side, I can store tons of TV shows/movies, since the resolution is low (320x240) it allows for excellent quality at lower bitrates, which translates into more movies/tv shows yea baby! If you were to encode a video at 768kbps with 128kbps sound quality, that equates to roughly 400MB of space per hour of video, which isn't bad at all in terms of quality. Other products like the Nokia 770 will only have about 1GB of memory stick space to put movies on, and at a resolution of 800x480, most likely you will need a much higher bitrate to get quality video playback, I'd assume 1Mbps at least probably more, which only allows for roughly 1 movie 8(. Thank you Sony for not creating a product that tries to be everything to everyone, products that attempt to do this, usually become a jack of all trades and good at nothing. Give me my Mylo!*Sony passes me a check thanking me for the advertising* 2 dollars"So how about that discou..." "No"
