maxconsole.net — "Sony has filed a patent for a Wii remote type device which will allow for on-screen pointing. The patent application even states "A receiver portion including one or more sensor units located in or near the target area." This sounds like a sensor bar!"

I would say that since the patent was granted to Sony Computer Entertainment, it's a good indication that it will be used in some form of computer entertainment.

The Gyration Mouse works quite differently then the Wiimote, however, the technology used for pointing was in used before it found its way into the Wiimote, namely in modern LCD/projector compatible lightguns (old CTR ones worked of course differently):http://hardware.teamxbox.com/reviews/xbox/46/LCD-TopGun-Light-Gun/p1/

Actually distr, Nintendo had been working with Sony to release a CD add-on for the SNES. The SNES control scheme had already been out for years, and Sony did copy it; the first Playstations came with non-analog controllers, just a D-pad, four buttons and shoulder triggers.http://www.vidgame.net/SONY/psx.htm

It's good that they are doing this, heck they might even improve it. Funny how most diggers are against patents but yet go crazy over this.

Yes. They have spies. The phones-er Wii's-are tapped so you know exactly what which Wii is playing and there is a transponder to tell you where everyone is in the building, as everyone caries around a Wiimote. Trust me.

Ugh....here Sony goes again....First the SNES, then the Analog, what next? The PlayStation Thrii? With advanced motion sensing technology? I swear...if sony does this one more time....Yeah, they might improve it, but so could Nintendo. After all, the Zune was an improvement on the iPod, and where did that go?

Oh but of course, NOBODY copied Sony's Dual Analog stick idea with their controllers did they?/sarcasm

I've read as much as I can of this forum and I can't hold my tongue any longer... THIS IS NOT A PATENT! Sony has not been granted a patent. I repeat, Sony has NOT been granted a patent on this remote. Other, intelligent users here have pointed out the striking differences between the application filed by Sony and the the Wii remote, so I'll not repeat them. However, the document in question is an application for a patent, NOT A PATENT.PGPUBs, otherwise known as "pre-grant publications", seem to be causing some confusion here. An actual patent has a patent number, in the form of "7,123,456", whereas a PGPUB is presnted as "2006/01234567" PGPUBs are publications of the applications filed in order make the disclosed technology available to the public, that way even if an applicant is denied patent protection for thier disclosure, the information contained therein is made a part of the public domain. That is ultimately what the Patent Office's job is, to get the technology and the ideas out there for everyone to benefit from.regards, themadsquirrel
