I've been watching a lot of WWI stuff lately. What a bulls**t war. They weren't even really fighting FOR anything, just a few countries that didn't like each other and wanted to see them wiped out, and also the conquest for more territory. Absolutely pathetic.
"Goodbye to All That" by Robert Graves. The war diaries of the guy who wrote "I, Claudius". Not fictionalised, actual true stories. Has some great parts about the war hero and poet Siegfried Sassoon (a close friend of Graves), and about T.E.Lawrence (of Arabia).

My uncle fought in WWII for the Germans (against Russia) and sent home dozens of letters, which I've put online. Also included are a bunch of photos of him: http://www.kmoser.com/friedrich-moser-letters/

Awsome account, gives a great sense of what it was like to be there. He includes little details that would normally be ignored but these create the human side to it and make it a more enthralling read.http://www.trenchdetectives.com/
