"When do you need air conditioning? When it is hot and sunny!"You sure about that? What about people who are only in their bedrooms when they sleep? My girlfriend's house doesn't have central air, before she got a window air conditioner for her room she could hardly sleep in the summer because it was so hot and muggy.
@merreborn and if you read the article, you'll notice that they don't use solar panels. You'll also see that these have been built and sold for a few years.
jcmead: Yes, no electric involved. Maybe that's why my post says: "They go on to mention that since this doesn't use electricity,"But it's not really solar. It's gas powered. It's being sold on buzz here.If you had a very large panel, you might be able to make it be just solar. But you'd need a very large panel. And I'm still not sure how well it would work, apparently these systems they describe need very hot water, the kind it's difficult to get from solar panels but easy when burning fuel.
if i am correct in thinking ,, ppl been using solar powered a/c in oz for a few years ,,,,, and when it not sunny enought they switch it over to the house power .......... look about you lot !! ............it around ,, or pls prove me wrong !!!! coz i want to know
dude this will never work in Florida....its like a swamp here....i might try to mound up dirt all around my house to cool down !!!! is 1400+ kwh a month a lot for a single person household?

and the manufacturing of solar cells is a VERY green process :) (the semiconductor industry in general is about as non-green as it gets.)now, solar thermal heating is a bit better, and some estimates put a household system at 5 year payoffs in the mid-atlantic states. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_thermal

Take a look at these:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propane_refrigeratorhttp://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=propane%20refrigeratorSo, replace the propane burner with a solar heater

Other articles (just google solar cells) explain the conversion in detail :). I digg! You so hot, makes me stay cool :-)Skydive72http://www.talktrust.com (Safe calls. Any phone, any where. FREE)

thin panels use 1/100 the silicon of regular panels so the cost SHOULD come down in the future........

actually they have working engines that use air only *after initial startup with a traditional fuel...
