reuters.com — Sun-powered-car enthusiasts from around the world raced into the Australia outback on Sunday at speeds nearing 100 kilometres-per-hour at the start of the World Solar Challenge. The only rule over the mostly straightaway course through Australia's "red centre" is that the custom-built vehicles run on nothing but the sun.

I tools part in this a long time ago. The cars are powered by batteries and the cells are use to recharge the batteries. Just our motor alone and associated electronics was $25K. I don't know what it is now. The 'car' is just more than a bicycle with a frame to hold the cells, Google sunracer. This was our competition that won. I think shortly thereafter one of the drivers was killed.
