jrsays.com — It struck me the other day, watching several phone potatoes doing their "social" thing, that while people are communicating more than ever – on phones and through (ahem) “social” networks and email and text messaging – that they (we!) might actually be more isolated than ever.

Hasn't reached the level of what? I'm not saying I disagree on various specifics, but I can't agree with a statement as generalized as that. But you have to realize that ultimately, physical social interaction is NOT SPECIAL. Human beings have a very deep-seated need for interaction and connection to others, particularly of like mind...but only a tiny fragment of that need is for companionship of a nature that can never be satisfied remotely, that primarily being romantic involvement. All other forms of social interaction can now or some day soon be exercised using technology, and the abstraction does nothing to devalue the nature of the interaction. Our interactions are already abstracted by our own human bodies even in the physical world. Even that is a hurdle to overcome with the aim of really connecting to others. If you want to point out something healthy, point out the divide in expected standards of modesty, manners, and behavior overall between the internet and other contexts online or offline.

lets be honest, all my friends on my social sites are more like acquantiances rather than friends. We might read each others comments, look at photos, but anything more than that - no. Not that it's wrong but the misconception is wrong.... My definition of friend is the people i actually look for, want to be around, and want to hang out with. thats why after a while most social sites have hundreds if not thousands of memberships that are in active.

The article is a little obvious, but I'm gonna Digg it too because I fully agree.
