upi.com — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Adult and Child Health Smoking-Attributable Mortality, Morbidity and Economic Cost software, said that during 2000-04, an estimated 443,000 people in the United States died prematurely each year as a result of smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke.

I blame those dumb ass "No stank you" ads. Every time I see one of those it makes me want to smoke, or just get wasted. .

This argument is kind of irrelevant now. It's rare that you can smoke anywhere in public - bars, restaurants, public buildings, movie theaters, hotels, planes, trains, apartment buildings (some), etc. It's even moving into outdoor spaces like parks. I just hope that once smoking is completely banished from the public sphere, that you can stop with your 'I'm a victim of second hand smoke' tirade. And, forget about 'fast food'. How about the 100 million cars on the road spewing chemicals as harsh as what's in cigarettes? I can tell you, that big haze of smog hovering about my city isn't caused by cigarette smoke. Your logic about fast food '"never harming anyone but the person who eats" kinda falls flat with cars. ;)

There is significant research showing that, given premature mortality, smoking actually saves society money. Old people cost money.http://www.press.uchicago.edu/presssite/metadata.e ...While I think smoking is crazy, I certainly don't believe it should be outlawed or significantly taxed. If people want to kill themselves, more power to them. I'll take it to the bank.

Nibus , you sound like a namby pamby little gentlemen with all your whining.
feragoNov 14, 2008
You also have the right not to be a whiny bitch...I think you're sadly misinformed if you think second hand smoke is the worst thing that you're breathing in when you walk down the street.

You get an auto-bury from me for using "strawman". That's a digg meme now, and should go away. Seriously. Did you every say "strawman" before you saw it on digg? Please don't tell me you're annoying enough to use it in verbal conversation. That would be annoying as hell.Yes, I did read the wiki. I cross reference wikipedia (and OTHER resources) every time I post something. Its a little trick I learned in college.. you know, making sure you know what the f**k you're talking about before you say it. I'm guessing you just skimmed that ONE article and based your argument on that. Did you notice I said 1/4th risk? That's from your stupid wiki article. Okay so maybe I should have said 1/3rd, but even that was just based on one guy's GUESS with no solid research to back it up. Read it again."While there is scientific agreement regarding the existence of a link between passive smoking and heart disease, the magnitude of the increased risk remains debated by a minority of epidemiologists.[87] For example, John Bailar of the National Academy of Sciences questioned the proportionality of the passive smoking risk, stating: Regular smoking only increases the risk of cardiovascular disease by 75%, so how could second-hand smoke, which is much more dilute, have an effect one-third that size?"Sorry for being an argumentative troll here. I really wasn't going to respond 7 f**king hours later after the story is dead, but really.. "strawman" is just such a stupid thing to say.

"Did you every say "strawman" before you saw it on digg?"Yes I did.... it has NOTHING to do with digg and what you said was a strawman.

For every person that smoking kills there's 10 more with serious side-effects. It's terribly addicting and shuts down the primary system for cleaning your lungs, and the associated health costs are BILLIONS of dollars! THIS is OUR money blown on preventables and is currently one of the largest burdens on health care. I don't see people sticking up for heroin and crack users, and it's really the same problem, except the drug-users at least die quickly. The guesstimate for smokers to pay their own way, that is, pick up the cost of their habit rather than spreading it out among the healthy insured, is about $18+ per pack. Otherwise, smokers rely on the 'system' to pick up the shortcomings.Prepare for swift retribution as these facts come out. Smoke? Well, no insurance for you. Smoke? Well, not if you want to rent. (Yes, it's expensive to clean those walls, and no, the smell will never come out of the carpet, and yes, the guy upstairs doesen't deserve to smell your nastiness). The next step is work: want to work and smoke? I don't think so. It's NOW ok to deny work based on smoking: you guys take more sick days, take more breaks, and you stink even after that breath mint. Some government jobs already include this exclusion, and with a tighter economy coming up, and the challenges ALREADY having passed court muster, expect to see it spread like wildfire. The fact that you NEED a 'false sense of security' via nicotine says loads about you too. The industry views you as a statistic to exploit and despite any and all warnings you continue to pollute yourself and those around you.Kids gloves are off. This 17th century anachronism has no place in modern society. The whole "well alcohol does this" crap is laughable too, you sound like a 10 year old saying "Well billy gets to do this.." The only reason these damn things are still legal is money. The gov't makes MORE than the tobacco companies, but they both make ridiculous amounts of money on OUR misery. $200 million a year in legal bribes to our gov't via lobbyists and a tax rate unheard of in any other industry. You are RATS to them. They purposefully alter the nicotine levels in every batch to keep you addicted. A little gem of knowledge they discovered while testing on rats. If you had half a brain you'd look up their disclosures they were forced to make after the settlement: they LIED, repeatedly, intimidated and bribed people all they could. And this was the stuff that wasn't shredded. Finally, STFU about whining about how you are sick of hearing this. I'm sick of paying for your stupidity. And pretty soon we're simply not going to.How secondhand smoke screws you:The problem is that just a whiff of nicotine does something bad to the primary pulmonary mechanism responsible for cleaning.. The mucocilliary escalator becomes paralyzed by even faint exposure to inhaled nicotine (we don't know why). 4-8 hours is the average, but with repeated exposure it will remain 'off' for several weeks. This 'elevator' is what moves the junk up out of your lungs. No muco-elevator: it stagnates and sits -> emphysema, bronchitis and/or with enough cellular damage: cancer. Thats why barworkers develop a smokers hack without smoking: when smokers sleep, rather than junk cleaning out, it just 'pools' on whatever side you are sleeping on, leaving you a glob of junk to manually cough up every morning..ok. Long rant over. Can you tell this is my passion? -RRT, pulmonary specialist, and has seen FAR too many people die from something that is wholly preventable.

From your rant I can tell you drink too much and it has diminished your mental abilities. According to you, smoking will quickly kill off all those smokers before they kill us. So what is the problem? And please check on the alcohol related death rate, both on and off the highway. While your are at it, put a price tag on the millions of of families that are directly affected, no destroyed, by alcohol. Like smoking, alcohol serves absolutely no purpose and should be banned just as smoking should. Sitting by a smoker is really annoying, but if I had to listen to your self righteous ranting, now that would truly be insufferable.
