nytimes.com — The World Health Organization estimates that tobacco will kill up to a billion people in the 21st century, most of them in poor and middle-income countries. In an effort to cut that number, Bill Gates and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Wednesday that they will spend $500 million to stop people around the world from smoking.

@cph1: Second Hand Smoke has not been proven to cause lung cancer. There have been numerous studies that show this if you'd stop listening to the anti-smoking companies and actually do some research. There was a study in Germany of their stewardesses who worked on flights where smoking was allowed, and the lung cancer rate among them was the same as it was amongst the average population. There was a giant WHO study in the 90's no one knows about that showed the opposite of the 1994 EPA study, but was brushed aside even though it was a more comprehensive study.

I read an interesting "medical research" paper a few years ago. As I recall, it conclusively proved that smoking cigarettes often kills people...

Did you not read my whole post???I said that I don't believe outlawing smoking is the answer. I said that if the illegeal and unethical practices of big tabacoo were curbed, and they were put out of business, smoking would decrease.I was simply stating that it's an important issue, it kills a LOT of people, and it's addictive. Talking about that side of it is not "running other peoples lives".

Do you have a pain you can't deal with? Anger, childhood needs not met, a father that wasn't available, an abussive mother? There are a lot of addictions to distract you from feeling your pain. You need to get over your pain by feeling it to be able to see what caused it . Other addictions to distract you from feeling your pain: loud music, TV, working too much, smoking, alcohol, drugs, eating too much. You picked smoking. Most smokers started as children or teenagers.
