upi.com — Her neighbor in Akarp in southern Sweden, a lawyer, demands 15,000 kroner ($2,000) in damages for her previous smoking plus another 2,000 kroner ($280) every time she lights up in the future. "It makes me sad and angry," the 49-year-old single mom told Aftonbladet. "Should somebody else be able to control my life?"

I'll second that... but now I'm wondering if the god of the old testament was a smoker. Based on scripture, he seems to have the "f**k you if you don't agree with me, I'll do what I want anyway and kill you if you don't like it" attitude, so I vote yes. Plus, he revealed himself in a burning bush. If that's not a smoking gun, I don't know what is. Jesus, on the other hand... hashpipe, yes; cigarettes, no. On a sidenote, if god WAS a smoker, then could jesus's death have been classified as a second-hand smoke related death? I mean technically, it could, right... growing up with a smoker for a father, even if he was never around and you were raised primarily by your mom and her husband with all those half-siblings. Then again, maybe there's a reason the bible doesn't mention anything between preteen age and 30-ish. Hmmm... Damn your icon for getting my mind on that, yuckfou. ;) Makes me wanna kick Michaelangelo in the nuts. And yes, I read the bible for literary value, not literal value. Goddamned religious assh**e biblethumpers! It's a f**king book!

If he wants to spend his money on smokes don't criticize him over it. We don't need smokey the anti-smoking bear visit him to tell him the dangers of smoking. He is an adult and is aware the dangers.

@martailActually smoking is a net monetary *GAIN* by the government. All these studies about cigarette smoking costing us so much money fail to include all the money smoking saves us by causing early deaths. Sure, a smoker uses up more medical resources when he is 65 than a non-smoker but he isn't around to be using up resources at 80 and since older people start needing more and more medical care this isn't insignificant. The economist did an analysis of smoking costs awhile ago. It was pretty close as I remember as to whether smokers ended up using more or less government health benefits but there was no question that the big taxes the government collects from cigarettes more than outweighed any slight net cost from smokers.

There's no way that from 20 feet away in an outdoor garden that she could possibly be making a noticeable affect. This is pure bulls**t. I hope your neighbor sues you for wearing cologne and letting the smell waft onto their property, then your other neighbor sues you for starting your car and letting the exhaust fumes come onto theirs and "potentially killing them." I believe the math was fully explained earlier as to the harmful effects of a volume of smoke. It's nil. Nevertheless, that car exhaust is stinky and smoky... and your car also makes noise. That noise is a nuisance and your right to start your car should end where it intrudes on my right to not hear it. Are you starting to see where this litigious s**t will lead us? Then I hope all your neighbors sue you for having a cookout and letting the sound of your children and friends bother them, the smell of your food invade their homes, and of course all that DEADLY smoke. By your own arguments, you should be held legally liable and have to pay all your neighbors just because you want to drive to work, then eat and maybe even speak aloud before going inside when you get home.

"If it were really about getting her to stop smoking when he can smell it, he'd be trying to get a restraining order that stipulates that she must maintain a minimum distance of x whenever she smokes."Uh... nope. She can smoke inside with the windows closed, on her property, 1 metre away from him as the crow flies (if crows could fly through walls) and there wouldnt be a problem. Stipulating a minimum distance would be totally ineffectual. I guess since smokers dont realise their breath stinks of ashtrays, they are a bit clueless on the physics of how the smell of cigarette smoke spreads.
