/. is just plain ugly, and you have to admit everyone of these layouts are ugly.He also says "this is a jpg image - not css that I thought would win"ugh, welcome to the internet buddy [create in photoshop, coding in css] not too difficult?
So CmdrTaco didn't like the actual look of Sujar Thomas who did a very accurate CSS version of /. ? WTF? Why criticize the elements as excessive and clumsy when they are there as an incorporation of the already horrible design?Perhaps Taco is looking for something (seemingly) barebones with plenty of white space, few pics, a readable font, and not-overly-saturated colors that are easy on the eyes. Now if only there was a social/tech news site with those elements....Of course - I was a fan of the OMG!!!Ponies!!! look myself - ahem, cough, cough.
I was going to give it a go and then I typed in the horrid logo font and Photoshop crashed. I figured that was sign enough for me not to do it. As far as the designs posted, none of them leap out and say "pick me." However, /. is about content and not design. I think someone just needs to mash up the design ('cause with his rules and icons, you're never going to make it look good) and make the font more reader friendly and have a go at better navigation. The nav is not at all intuitive. For a first time visitor, who's going to know what those big ugly pictures are, let alone that they are navigation for sections. I wouldn't mind winning the new Mac Powerbook though.

I too hate that color combination, we'd get along just fine I think.
