gigaom.com— A tipster - a very reliable one - told Om Malik that Skype is almost ready to launch an iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week.

This will mostly benefit iPhone users who make international calls and those who are already addicted to Skype on the their computer. Almost certainly it will be Skype over WiFi only, not over 3G. Until now, Fring has been the best VOIP client for iPhone. It could actually hook up to your Skype account, but sound quality was pretty bad. I cant' wait to see if this Skype rumor turns true.
When Apple launched App Store for iPhone they made it pretty official that VOIP applications will only be allowed to connect via WiFi not via 3G. This is controlled on iPhone operating system level. So far this has been the case. I'd love to be proven wrong, but it's unlikely that Skype could influence Apple at the expense of their relationships with AT&T. But then again somebody pointed out that on jailbroken phone there an "unauthorized" app that tricks iPhone into thinking that it's connecting via WiFi.
You're wrong, VoIP is cheaper than AT&T's if you use a lot of voice minutes. You could downgrade to the lowest monthly minutes, and use Skype on 3G for the majority of your calls and wind up saving cashola.
Why? How is Apple to blame for Skype only now getting to the game? Apple's done nothing to prevent VoIP apps.. Truphone's been out since day 1 of the App Store.
None of the BlackBerries I've come in contact with at work have WiFi and I don't use one. thanks andersleet for the clarification.Looks like Spacenoodle is the smacktard for thinking they all did.

skype is widely used and few of the other alternatives you mention are something old Mrs Robinson can just do herself and get cracking

Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations.
