newsfactor.com — Our aim is that Mac users can talk for free with everyone they know regardless of whether they're on Mac, Windows, Linux or on a regular phone," said Stephanie Zari, a Skype spokesperson. "We hope that the ability to talk to anyone in the world will be a useful supplement to their iChat service."

Its been out for a while. The lag on the video chat is pretty awful, but if your iChat isn't working for some reason, it can be a reasonable alternative.

The previous 'beta' was actually leaked and was not officially endorsed by Skype. It apparently corrupted some people's contact list but worked for others.

The link i just gave is for beta 2.0, keitaro1984's links if for beta 1.5 which i believe was problematic.

It's awesome. If only I could get my friends to use it.Is there a way to chat with AIM users through Skype?

People are mistaken. You CAN use video iChat with other .mac and AIM users. I have an AIM handle, and I have no problems doing video with other AIM members on Mac or PC via iChat.Don't forget, you can do audio (and possibly video) chats with people on the jabber network, too. If you have gmail, you have jabber access. In fact, you can talk to anyone on the google talk network, too. Here are many ways to configure iChat for jabberhttp://www.google.com/search?ie=utf8&oe=utf8&q=ichat+configuration+for+jabberThat said, the Skype video beta has been out for quite some time. It's a resource hog. I have a wimpy 867 MHz PB. So, I don't get the full benefits, but it offers great video and audio quality.P

I downloaded and installed this new version yesterday. But, I noticed a little quirk: Unlike the earlier video-capable beta for mac (yes they had one all these days), this new one doesn't show the little red number in the dock icon for missed events. I missed four calls on skype yesterday, and yet the dock icon remained clean. So I'm back to skype 1.5 now.

Mac to Mac, iChat is the tool of choice and always will be. Especially with the extra bells and whistles Apple are introducing in Leopard. Skype will never be able to top that. But Apple don't have a decent solution for Mac to PC vid chat, and Skype fills that niche perfectly. Bottom line; Skype doesn't compete with iChat, it complements it.
