gigaom.com — Five years after its launch, Skype is now the largest provider of cross-border voice communications in the world, Telegeography says. Or as my friend Andy Abramson would say: The world’s biggest minute stealer.

I have one of the WiFi phones from Skype. I don't need my computer on and I can use it anywhere in my house.

Skype is one of the few programs that offers video/voice chat between platforms (my gf is on my old Kubuntu machine, her family is running Windows). My girlfriend uses it for a Skype to Skype call to her family in the Philippines, and can chat as long as she wants, vs $45 for a 30 minute call via my TELUS land line. Although if Yahoo had a decent Linux client that would support video/voice, she wouldn't use Skype at all. Until that day arrives, it will be Skype all the way.

Don't know what bases you're talking about, but we can see our family and friends every day if we like.
