Hi Stephen :DWhat have you got against First Great Western? I use them to get to my girlfriend's parents out near Swindon and the trains are normally on time and quite comfortable. Much better than FIrst Great Eastern (now known as One).Although on One you can bonk the fare.
The problem with Amtrak is that it is consistently underfunded. The same is true of most public transit systems in the United States with the notable exception of the airline industry. What I'd like to see is a 50% cut in subsidies to the airlines, and use that money to eliminate grade crossing on all Amtrak routes over time. And lets not even talk about the subsidy given to car owners. That's another key difference between the U.S. and Europe or Asia.
Trains have been an issue in Ohio recently. There have been proposals to get a rail line from cleveland to columbus to cincinatti (there was one back in the 1800's). In Columbus, they're going to build streetcars because of the success Portland, OR has had with theirs.I think a resurgence in trains would be a better alternative to more cars and jets. Trains are much more fuel efficient and faster than a car. They'd be great for intra-state travel. When I went to France, I loved the TGV with how fast it was to get from Paris to Avignon in just a few hours.
No. First thing you do is have guards with riot shields pushing people into the train that linger at the door entry looking for a seat. These are for non-commuter rail like the MBTA and MTA. Then find a way to fine people or castrate them for standing in the doorway. They do this so that they are the first to get off however they are usually five stops away from departing. Fine or castrate people standing in the doorway on the platform. If they try to get in while people are getting of they are ejected from the station and forced to wait till their pass is active again (20 minutes). The skip stop train idea is awesome. They used to do that instead of holding a train between station for "schedule adjustment"<a class="user" href="http://xn--ugb6bax.xn----ymcae0df5a6fo.com/">http://xn--ugb6bax.xn----ymcae0df5a6fo.com/</a><a class="user" href="http://xn----ymcae0df5a6fo.com/">http://xn----ymcae0df5a6fo.com/</a>

Actually they are still running your trains on those same rails. That's why they don't go over 40 MPH!
