You can only do DOWN once you are in the Earth's atmosphere at a certain maximum speed, about 120MPH, If you enter the atmosphere faster than that, most of the remaining kinetic energy will carry you sideways, the rest will be dissipated by the friction of the atmosphere as virtually unrecoverable heat! That is why heat shields are so essential to re-enter the atmosphere in one piece!
