I currently admin a small (60-70) person network. And yes, i do not allow products to be installed that are this big of a security and privacy threat. Not it doesn't give a user any extra functionality what so ever. Sure the search is faster, but all you can do from the search is open the file. What good is that?
Erica,While that mindset certainly sounds "friendly", it could be unhealthy if IT is not keeping focus on what is good for the company. I've worked with many network administrators who were keenly interested in making friends and using their job as political leverage.
Why is this even an issue. My company requires admin access to install ANYTHING on our machines. I would think most companies would have this policy towards their workstaions.
Well.. Let's not forget that at least Google has put some effort to bring local search at ease with GDS - free ('search across computers' flag is optional, yea?).Now having said that, this is what I've expienced: even when I have that 'search across computers' flag turned off, GDS is still (even when it's in idle state) trying asking the firewall time and again to access the google domains like 216.239.57.104, 64.233.189.104, etc. :s
it's ironic that google has this spyware tool and yet is pretending that they are against the government spying on its search users, when they really only are bothered about keeping their own data and.
If this company wants to prevent people from running GDS, then that is up to them. It's THEIR COMPUTERS. This is no different from banning IM programs or P2P.

Google Desktop should be allowed/disallowed within the walls of a particular corporation. It should not be banned in general. That's ridiculous!!

Ban that too. Along with Windows itself. Also ban AOL and Electronic Arts. Then ban George Bush.

Actually GDS will let you view a 'cached' version of the document (stored locally, not the remote thing) so that you don't have to open it
