@ltchimpo - If someone fires a bullet directly at you at close range, a hand isn't going to do much, even if you could throw it up in time. But if the shot is a ricochet, or from a great distance, or the bullet passes through something else first, slowing it to a speed where it is less likely to achieve full penetration, then hitting your hand before hitting your chest could theoretically make a difference.It's still unlikely, though, as your guess is wrong: 8 inches of muscle is nothing like a sandbag. Muscle is actually very easy to penetrate. Ever chew on a rare steak? Muscle is strong under tension along the axis of the fiber, but it is like butter with regards to penetration. Sand particles tend to lock up under extreme pressure, so they resist penetration relatively well. Try punching the sand vs. pushing your finger in slowly, to feel the difference.
