news.fudo.org — Shaw Cable, a Western-Canadian ISP has begun to roll out technology that will limit the bandwidth given to BitTorrent users and P2P alike. Considered I was guaranteed up & down speed as well as "unlimited" Data transfer, I find this a tad ridiculous.

Sooner or later isp's will manage to even filter out bitcomet. How? Simple enough they use url based matching, if you access a trackers url from your address, then that address gets it's connection severely capped, probably to something like 10k both ways.Which would make it so customers could either do things like webrowsing or just bittorrenting, but not both at the same time.Filtering of other protcols such as gnutella, edonkey2000 and fasttrack would also likely to be put in place.Sure it will start out with just a few isp's doing it, then spread to the rest eventually.Really it is well known that such filesharing is very vulnerable, not just from being abused by users, but also from things like filtering.Given much of the news lately filesharing over the internet is in serious danger. On the bright side users don't need it anymore as there are safer alternatives. Eventually most sites and services will migrate to the i2p network.

So its lovely that BitComet allows for encrypted headers but do any other clients support such features, either by default of through plug-ins? Because at the moment I do not think any of the Mac clients support encrypted headers which basically means I am stuck with s**t speeds because ISPs are deciding to be pains in the ass.Iggy *ugh*

Screw Shaw. They are trying to screw us knowledgable consumers at every turn. Soon they are gonna turn this around and say that if we want a higher cap, we'll have to pay so much every month. INTERNET REBELLION TIME!

DSL all the way baby. SBC doesn't care if I run a server off my connection unlike all the cable providers. Perhaps they understand that BT isn't just for pirating? Does this also mean that all the cable companies that block BT will also be restricting all the people that play World of Warcraft since Blizzard uses BT to download their patches?I use BT all the time btw...almost everday. And NEVER for illegal purposes. When a new BSD or Linux distro goes live, I help out and keep my BT open for a few days to keep the seeds running for it. The same for patch day on WoW. I also use it for demos of games and demo movies. All legal legit encouraged practices yet for some reason BT is viewed by some as evil.

I believe that the current anti-piracy campaigns in Canada might be the cause of this. The recording industry seems to be making lots of progress in the courts. Wasn't Shaw the first one to step up and say NO, when the Recording industry in Canada wanted information on people who share? We need to be more aggressive, letting them know we don't need Big Brother watching and or restricting us. Talk to your local representatives.A Shaw Calgary Technician.

I'm getting over 220KB/s. I'm on Shaw. It seems OK to me, even with the limiting.

Are they doing this with RoadRunner too? BIttorrent has been usable for the last couple of months...

For those of you with slow bittorrent problems with Shaw, what cable modem do you have? I've got the Motorola SB5100 and i'm experiencing ~1Kb/s upload/download rate. Sux. I've spoken to a lot of heavy BT users who have the old "shark fin" Terayon Modems from Shaw and they have no problems using BT.

Well look at this what are the odds that Id find a thread with posts from a bunch of retards, first off obviously you all know nothing about the internet as are all clearly retarded. I mean bitch all you want but lets get real all this is is a bunch of bitches crying that they cant ILLEGALLY download the s**t they want and are pissed off about it. Well lets look at this option, we can download what we want when we want BUT that being said the corporations/bands/production companies can then say that they want lists of all persons ILLEGALLY downloading their s**t. Personally I dont want MGM or Metallica or f**king any other big company kicking my door in charging me with copywright violations, its like crying that the cops took yer crack away cause guess what it too is ILLEGAL. Man ISPS should have intellect tests b4 they sign up customers cause then itd prevent the internet being over saturated with a bunch of hersey highway ridding curtains in the truck loving inbred f**ks who still think mullets are cool.

To the moron above:What the hell are you talking about? If you're going to insult people, at least make paragraphs, moron. I mean, honestly. You didn't even spell copyright properly. Plus, none of your points make any sense. What does being inbred have to do with anything? Since when are BT users inbred? You seriously have some issues.Morever, you're clearly American- although that might be why you're so stupid. Shaw is CANADIAN. In Canada, downloading is *not* illegal. We can download all we want, and it would be fine, as long as we don't make money off of it. So STFU dolt.

I'm very pleased with Shaw Services, and do not function with an adolescent notion that the world revolves around me. Secondly, if some of you were taken back in time to when we used 2200 baud modems on trumpet socket, dial-up systems I am certain you would get on your hands and knees and give thanks to the engineers, technicians, and other support staff who provide 24/7 assistance to their customers. And for the technological capabilities that you have grown accustomed. Secondly, I will admit that I download torrents, but only to test drive products before purchase. Otherwise, how can it be expected that software developers will be able to continue with necessary R&D. The basis of my argument is simply that to complain that an ISP is targeting bandwidth consumption is really quite absurd. Especially, when such consumption is due to often times willful theft of copyrighted materials, which are most certainly affordable, and could even be more affordable by a larger mass of "purchased" consumption.Grateful Canadian Shaw Client

Well I called shaw and upgraded to Extreme-I yesterday... Then I noticed my torrent speeds went down the s**tter. I got almost exact advertised speeds... ON SPEED TESTS... Torrents were s**t, under 200k a sec. Sometimes it would spike up to 3-600k, but then drop right back down.Called Shaw to switch back to regular high speed, expecting nothing, talked to the guy for a bit. Tried to sell me some bulls**t about servers/clients/bittorrent not being that stable, blah blah blah. Then he starts going into wireless, router, blah blah blah.. Listen buddy, IT JUST got 15/1mb on a speed test, and when I connect to tons of people to download stuff, it won't even go over 400k, so do not say it is the router. IT JUST DID 15mb from ONE SERVER! I put the phone down for a few minutes and left him to think to himself, told him to switch me back to the regular high-speed, and went on to say how I was mad, and trying to look around at other Internet providers websites.. He said he switched my account back.Within 5 minutes of hanging up, and going back to the regular high speed. My downloads are OVER the advertised speed for the package I am on. 7/1mb and I am seeing 800-1000k sustained download now, and my upload is over 70k..Hopefully it stays at these speeds, for the high speed price.
