Star Trek XI would be a great time to do something completely different - introduce an entirely new Star Trek franchise in a *movie*, not a TV show.

The Klingons are nothing after Khitomer, and Khitomer happened in the earlier ST movies. The Federation and Klingons wont be at each other, but since this is an earlier pre-TOS movie, he wouldnt say "Again with the Klingons"

I can only imagine that any part they play in the movie will be then remembering the old days at the Academy or something along those lines, and then the flashback starts, which is the main movie. Wonder if a young Kirk will come in contact with Scott Bakula at some point during the film...

It was touched on in the DS9 tribble episode. It was actually explained in the Enterprise spinoff during the episodes Brent Spiner guest starred in as an ancestor of Data's creator.
