readwriteweb.com — "Increasingly marketing firms are using popular social networks on the Web as part of their campaigns - creating fake user profiles to sell their products. The sexy Hotal Campari website had a complementary social network campaign based on youtube, myspace, flickr and many more."

has anyone released stats from these types of campaigns? yeah, they racked up a bunch of friends and got page views, but has there been any research done that shows social network promotion = bigger revenues? marketing and generating awareness are great, but if they don't lead to sales they're a worthless expenditure, no matter how clever.by the by- i absolutely positively hate fake profiles and messages from companies on myspace. i don't care if you're a webcam girl, some hot new underground band, or some wannabe hip liquor. don't email me with your commercial interests, that is spam. if they sent me a message, they would get the spam report and a quick profile block. buy some ad space and leave my profile alone.

It's been this way for a long time. From "yellow journalism" a hundred years ago to the Catholic church persecuting Galileo for stating that the Earth was not the center of the universe, despite the fact that church scholars had already figured that out. The people with the money and the power have always been able to covertly influence the rest of the populace. The Internet doesn't make it worse, it makes it better. These secrets are much easier to expose because there are many more eyes looking at them and when they are discovered, the Internet becomes the great equalizer. It's just as easy to expose the lies as it was to propagate them. Contrast this to the pre-Internet days when the lies were spread via newspapers and TV. The average Joe didn't have much of a platform to speak out against the deception. If net neutrality is ever destroyed the Internet will become the same mouthpiece of the powerful that the rest of the media is.

Interesting comments and I am thinking that its all persona period, whether its corporate or personal you simply choose to engage or ignore! I remember in the early 90s using Kermit to telnet around the net at my local university and all the academics were telling me and my hacking buddies; "the net will never be commercial man, we won't allow it!" Ya right! Talk on all, talk on and here is a place to do it: www.verbdate.com with skypeweb!

There are important metrics in advertising aside from revenue. Brand awareness is really important. Sure, this might lead to more revenue over time, but it's not that simple to unravel.

That's what I did wrong. I should have made a fake profile instead of this one.

The fake profiles are so obvious... "Hi, my name is Alexa and I just moved near you and need someone to show me around... oh, and I'm really horny :)"If they tried a little harder their marketing conversion rates would be much higher, probably a good thing they don't though.http://www.nickjag.com/marketing

I mean sex fakes are so irritating and so obivoussocial networks should help you learn something rather than spend most of your time wasting by sending useless application requests then head over to an exclusively Indian social network for learninghttp://indianbee.com
