Not really, it's actually a daily newspaper, similar to any other small city daily. It is by no means respected, tolerated and widely subscribed to maybe.
Bleh.... People are being stupid. Yeah there's an old federal law stating the age of consent as 13, but it varies from prefecture to prefecture and tends to range between 16-18...
I'm marking this as inaccurate. It's from the Wai Wai column which translates tabloid pieces and "sports" magazines (think gossip mag for men). I think Westerners have glommed on to this piece because it confirms a long held stereotype about Japanese people that is negative and makes us feel a little superior.
First, it's non of our business. Imagine if other countries could have a say in what America does or doesn't do. Yeah, not everyone is OK hearing that Japan has a different age of consent that for us Americans is unlawful. Just remember that this so-called laws we built are mere traditions of what is just or correct. In reality, if we ban smoking... ten decades from now people would die at the thought that it was once legal to harm one's own health. Besides the Japanese have a great culture despite of all the negative feedback from America. I think they're doing just fine without our twisted opinions. Remember in a perfect world, everything is fair. If you don't believe this world is perfect, then you must believe God doesn't exist, or that he is capable of creating imperfection which would imply he is not perfect. Thus, either way you have no grounds to stand on when it comes to opposing anything. For you to have the wisdom in judging right and wrong, you must first answer this: Why are we here in this world? If everything we'll ever built will be destroyed by time, why do we continue living, the result is and will always be the same, death. If you can answer this without anyone or anything contradicting your answer ever, then you truly have the right to judge us, because that would make you God. LoL
I live 9 months out of the year in Mexico City, Mexico. The age of consent in Mexico City is 12 years old for girls. My wife is now 14 years old and we have been married two years. I am 56 years old. We are both happy and healthy. My great grand ma married my great grant pa when she was 13 he was 35 and did so in Indiana USA, in 1892. Believe and accept what you will and want but love knows little bounds. My wife cannot come with me to the US or I could be arrested. It makes her very sad and she thinks it is very stupid, that what we do everyday could put me in danger only by crossing a man made line on a map.

Haha, the original source was the WaiWai? It's basically a joke column that translates the craziest articles into English, like <a class="user" href="http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/news/20070614p2g00m0dm026000c.html">http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/news/20070614p2g00m0dm026000c.html</a> and <a class="user" href="http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/archive/news/2007/05/20070511p2g00m0dm019000c.html">http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/archive/news/2007/05/20070511p2g00m0dm019000c.html</a>
