howtoforge.com — This guide shows how to create your own DNS server on Ubuntu Edgy Eft with MyDNS and the MyDNSConfig control panel. MyDNS is a DNS server that uses a MySQL database as backend. The advantage is that MyDNS simply reads the records from the database and doesn't have to be restarted/reloaded when DNS records are modified.

Dugg for sure - but the DIGG title and text doesn't make it clear WHY you would install it. The reason is that having a local DNS can drastically speed up your websurfing.I did this recently. It's great. Basically, you go to Google, and it's IP is stored in your local DNS. The first time you go it might take your current dsl / cable providors DNS 50-100ms to get that info. From now on, your browser will grab that in 1ms from the LOCAL dns. The local DNS also makes sure that it's entries are fresh by checking them periodically. If you are going to mess with your DNS settings, then check out http://www.opendns.com too. Chances are that it is a better / faster DNS than the overloaded servers used by your ISP.At the end of the day, for general websurfing doesn't matter how much bandwidth you have - the DNS lookup is the bottleneck.
