articles.sfgate.com — A NY Democrat is making a personal plea to the Treasury Department to rule that carry-on bags are a necessity for travel, which would make them exempt from a separate fee outside the ticket price. "Airline passengers have always had the right to bring a carry-on bag without having to worry about getting nickeled and dimed by an airline company,"...

No, you misunderstood what I said. Airlines have always charged for luggage (at least in my lifetime), such as a heavy bag or too many bags, etc. They have not always charged for carryon baggage. We're basically saying the same thing. Not that it's the core of my point, but I think I was clear about that. You'll note that I didn't say the government doesn't gouge or take advantage of customers. We both know they do. That's not really relevant to the point at hand except to underline that travelers get screwed many times over.I definitely didn't say it's ok. I don't know why you're taking that approach. But you know what? I've said my piece. You all still think I'm full of s**t. So I'll give it a try and see if paying for my carryon ends up being something of a zero-sum charge because of reduced ticket prices. I'll give your viewpoint a chance. Here's hoping for the best.

"The main issue is that the Authoritarian Sociopath Schumer is menstruating..."Yeah. I'm gonna take your comment seriously.

And if all the big airlines collude to introduce this fee then what? I suppose small mom and pop airlines will spring up everywhere offering free carry on bags will they?

I see your point, though I still think it over-complicates the check-in process. If 90% of people check luggage (made-up number), then adding per-checked-bag payments means that you add some fixed amount of time onto the check-out process for 90% of people. If it ever became more common for people not to check bags, then it would make more sense.Similarly, if 90% of people asked for their burgers without mustard and pickles, they'd probably stop putting them on by default. It's all about efficiency and catering to the broadest market base. Why customize your payment model around an insignificant minority? And just to note, I don't feel all that strongly about this, and I completely understand your point, and wouldn't really care if a company did it your way. It makes sense if the affect on the majority is negligible, which probably isn't all that difficult to ensure.

Who defines what "essential service" the gubment can put their fingers into? Is air travel truly essential?

Hey .. we were charged for baggs because of high gas prices when will the prices for luggage wiped away. Now they are trying to charge for carry on bags. It is true where ever there is gold someone will try to steal it. We have to focus on accumulating more dollars in our pockets so these nickle and dime charges don't effect us. I give ever one the guide to riches so we can learn how to create wealth and riches and not have to worry about money.. who agrees with me.. Kim Dion
