thinkprogress.org — Yesterday, Rep. David Davis (R-TN) became the first incumbent Tennessee congressman to ?lose in a primary in more than four decades.? He lost to Johnson City, TN Mayor Phil Roe who accused ?Davis of selling out to ?big oil? by accepting money from industry PACs and backing legislation supporting offshore drilling?

I guess people listened to him and decided he was part of the problem and not part of the solution:“We need an American energy plan and we need it now. The American people are hurting, young families are hurting, senior adults are hurting, small businesses are hurting" - Rep David Davis, Aug 1, 2008

Davis lost by 500 votes in a TN primary. I fail to see how this was a victory over an oil sellout.Roe's was a "campaign of volunteers," GOP political consultant Jaime Osborne told The Hill. Osborne's Johnson City-based firm did both general and media consulting for Roe's campaign."The more Democratic slant on 'Big Oil,' where you have the rhetoric being about greed, that wasn't really our slant on it," Osborne said, despite the reference to "Big Oil" in Roe's ad. "It really wasn't their rhetoric. It was probably a lot more conservative in nature, in terms of anti-earmarks, anti-influence, clean up government," Osborne said.Don't believe the DCCC spin on this one. This district is solid GOP and Roe will be more anti-earmarks and still pro-drilling.
