It is required in the US on many types of food that have short shelf-lives (eggs,diary, meats, etc). For prepackaged foods that are made from things that not even bacteria want to eat, companies can use these cryptic codes.
What are you talking about? Food items in the US do have expiration dates or use by dates on canned and boxed foods as well as medications. No use putting a best buy sticker on fresh fruits and veggies. If someone is not able to tell rotten fruit from fresh fruit, they have problems no US law is going to help with.
