usatoday.com — Alongside the submarines, ships and airplanes participating in large-scale military exercises in the Pacific this month, a team of sea lions and dolphins are expected to patrol the sea. These marine animals will be flown in from San Diego for simulated mine recovery and mine detection during the biennial RIMPAC war games.

At least we don't use small children for our minefield cleanup like some countries.

Sounds like a morbid version of SeaQuest DSV

A lot of diseases are 'human problems' still how many animals are scarified to save humans? Mines are 'human problems' but still I think it's more ethical to send some dolphins or rats to go mark them then sending a human to find them. And besides, unmining, communication, seeking wounded soldiers, finding explosives I doubt the military will trust to arm any animals with real weapons as animals are still animals and I wouldn't trust a dolphin with explosives to make the difference between friendly and enemy vessels, let stand civil boats. But then again, my knowledge about animal training is quite limited.

@OdEa"why?, because its simply not ethically correct. wars are a human problem."You may raise a good point, but there have been cases (in WWII Pacific) that dolphins saved countless lives of sailors stranded at sea (from sharks). They did this on their own, no training. You raise an ethical question, but I believe that this form of "service" is a mutual thing. As someone mentioned they aren't trained to kill./but I recall that they may have been used in attaching mines to ships?//or was that a movie, too >:P///whatever, they seem to enjoy the "service"

There is a huge difference between sending in animals to get killed and seeing eye dogs.
