lifehacker.com — Ubuntu Version 8.04, or "Hardy Heron," is more a compilation of stable-ish features and proven apps than a showcase for the latest and greatest in Linux technology. But for those seeking a usable, steady system in which to get things done, that's a real killer app in itself. Let's see what's new, and what just works (and doesn't) in Hardy Heron

Is the new "uncomplicated firewall" a command-line activated ruleset for iptables, or something else entirely? In any event, there are GUIs for configuring IPTables that work just fine. I'm rather partial to Firestarter.

I have a question:what's this about a firewall? I thought linux was pretty locked down in that sense.

I just bought a new Dell laptop with Gutsy Gibbon installed on it for my non-techie wife. It runs super-fast without all the overhead of Windows XP or Vista. She is not having any problems getting used to the new OS. Ubuntu is a great Linux release!

"Pretty locked down"? It may have less daemons ("services" in MS-speak) running by default, therefore less to exploit, I suppose. But do you want to _rely_ on there being _nothing_ exploitable? If you have your machine behind a NAT router, there's little to fear. If you're out-and-about in the coffee shop or wherever, connecting over wifi, then perhaps you want a software firewall up and running. But Ubuntu users could install Firestarter from Canonical's repositories, anyway.

The new background is pretty awesome, IMO...(I use black and white and grey for everything else)

I would agree with kazamx, I always bought Nvidia just because I vote with my feet and I don't support hardware manufacturers that don't support linux, but ATI really upped their game when they got bought out by AMD. check out catalyst for linux http://ati.amd.com/products/catalyst/linux.html or for your particular card http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/

No wonder it isn't yet available for Linux... or anything else for that matter.
