A vaccine is anything that gives you immunity from a pathogen, bacterial or viral. The problem with a S. aureus vaccine is that no one Staph protein gives you immunity to it. Lots of labs have been trying, but nothing's worked well in humans. We'll probably need to inject people with a c**ktail of 10+ Staph proteins in the future to immunize people, and given that people will sue your butt off for any adverse reactions to a vaccine, don't expect this anytime soon.
