cnn.com— Officials fear students will get hurt and hold the school liable. Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

If someone is actually still wondering why there's a rise in school violence, I'd be really inclined to slap the taste out of their mouths. (irony?)KIDS NEED TO BE KIDS. Let them play dodgeball, let them get hurt, LET THEM FIND OUT WHAT THEY'RE GOOD AT.It's a shame people that sue schools get away with this. This country is in turmoil. So we can sue school districts for having monkey bars but we can't sue gun manufacturers for gun deaths?Stay classy, America.
So what happened to doing stunts and getting hurt bad, it's a learning expierence be more careful next time and have some fun. This summer I actually cut my thumb and the MIR Officer had to use steri-strips and a butterfly bandage.I'm sure that people who live in mountain biking communities are less caring about this becasue I know bikers who had to get 9 or more stitches from falling off one of their ameteur made ramps or rails.
@billoday,The answer is none. Not long ago, close to where I live, a student was playing tag football at recess and was impaled on a fence post. He died on the way to the hospital when the ambulance got a flat tire. The parents didn't sue anyone, and tag football wasn't banned. They didn't try to place blame on anyone, the odds were just against them that day. No one wants their child to be hurt, but if you constantly over protect them they will never learn to handle their own problems. I won't have my kids being whiny-ass-cry-baby-taddle-tales nor are they allowed to be bullies.I think the positives of tag outweigh the negatives.1. Learn to pick yourself up when you fall.2. Handle conflict with your peers.3. There are winners AND losers. (contrary to popular school teaching)4. You can't always win.5. How to lose gracefully.6. Having fun. I would pull my kids out of any school that banned tag or recess. I also think that anyone that considers tag "inappropriate touching" needs to be re-evaluated, they aren't in a good place mentally.
@MalWhen my daughter was in pre-school they weren't allowed to taddle unless someone was in serious danger. There was a rose on a table in the middle of the room (I know it's kind of hippie, but hear me out) they called it the peace rose. Whenever there was conflict between two kids (stealing, fighting, whatever) one would get the rose and the rule was that the other child had to listen. They took turns passing the rose back and forth one child listening while the other made their case. It forced them to resolve the conflict right there on there own, no adults. This was kids ages 3-4. It worked, the kids learned how to resolve their conflicts. Maybe instead of taking games away from the all kids you should tell them to suck it up and deal with it, they don't have to play if they don't want to.@Doubledown,You are correct. My mom is an ex-first grade teacher. The teachers in her school had to call the police if a kid became uncontrollable. They weren't allowed to touch them in fear that they would be sued.
They are supervised. The difference is that back in the day your teacher would tell you to stop being a pussy because you're embarrassing yourself. Now it's all about everyone winning and not getting your feelings hurt.
see what I don't understand they keep banning all these physical activities at recess, some public parks are banning them also, alot of schools are taking physical education programs out of their schools, yet everyone is complaining kids are obese, and not active. Well hell, your banning any physical activity they get with their friends at school and their parks.

Don't forget thinking."Don't worry about doing well on your test, Billy. Everyone get's an "A" just for showing up. We wouldn't want you to feel bad."
